Since attending the
2-tier cake at
Anna's workshop a month ago, I've been dying to try out a fondant cake myself. I brought back all the leftovers from her workshop as she said we can keep the unused in an air-tight container and put them in the fridge.
As I was really busy the whole week, I didn't really bake any cakes to try. So I planned a cake for Father's Day on Saturday as an early celebration with my family. I used the recipe from the workshop, which was Orange Cinnamon and frost it with cream cheese. I followed the exact sequence of how we did it the last based on my memory. I just love hands-on workshops as I'm those who "do to remember", and not "hear to remember"! Heehee...
As I did an 7" square cake, I decided on a shirt/tie design. It took me quite a while to try to cut and put them together. The weather was rather warm and the fondant was rather difficult to mould, especially smaller moulds. I really cannot imagine myself to come out with delicate pieces like what
Rei did! I really admire her patience and her works! Wonder how long it will take me to come out with what she has done. Hmm...
Nevertheless, my family was rather impressed with my first fondant piece. Though the works is so-so, but from far, it still looks alright, at least to them and myself (self comforting)! The only complaints they had were, the fondant was too sweet! They didn't like the fondant, but like the cake though.
Earlier this week, I made a Chocolate Almond Torte for a friend. She ordered it for her own birthday. Her family and her like the cake very much although it was really rich. I made some tuiles for her and another friend as a birthday gift. I'm glad that they like it.

Fondant is not for eating...I mean they are always way too sweet....like those pretty wedding cakes.....man....they are stunning, but...to enjoy a piece of cake, I would prefer a light airy cake.
You have been doing really great with all the baking courses.
More power to you and your soon-to-be-open bakery!

Angie
Hi Angie,
Ya, fondant cannot be eaten, though I quite like it! Heehee... Of course not a lot, just a bite or two. I thought at least among all the sweet decorations (sugar paste, royal icing, fondant), fondant is the least sweet among them!
Thanks a lot for your encouragement and your confidence in me. I'll make my dream become reality soon...:)
Hi Jane,
What a great combination of orange and cinnamon! I like this flavour and I could imagine how nice the cake serve with the cream cheese frosting.
The chocolate torte looks really good! You become more and more talented! I'm so admiring you!
Hi Grace,
Yes, I really like this flavour! Sorry, cannot post this recipe as it's from Sugar Inc. However, the next time we meet, I'll bake this for you okay? :)
Oh, no lah, chocolate almond torte was from THE CAKE BOOK. It's really a good recipe to keep, it's flourless. I love it myself too! I'm not as good as you when it comes to baking Grace, seriously. ;>
Jane, no one likes fondant. Unless its chocolate. :) Just my suggestion here on Fondant. To make Fondant cakes stand out well, don't be afraid to use strong colours. The tie and buttons are 'lost' in the photo due to the light hue. Always do colours that contrast with each other. Cakes for men are so much more challenging than for women.
Hi Gina,
Thanks very much for your suggestion. I just made do with the coloured fondant that I have, didn't mix in other colours. You're right, the colours were too light and can't see clearly. I welcome all comments and suggestions to improve. Thanks for sharing. :)
Hi Jane,
Ok.. next time please bake this orange cake for me ok. You can make very good cake Jane! That cannot compare as all those cakes me make is from our heart. It's always the best for people around us and that's how we bless them.
Yes Grace, can't agree more on home-bake compared to store bought. It's from the heart, it's baked with TLC (tender loving care)! Okay, will bake this for you when we meet. It has somehow, made it to my favourite list for baking now. :)
