(1) I haven't been baking as often as I want to,
(2) even if I bake, they were repeated recipes,
(3) I was testing out some recipes for my workshops, therefore, it won't be appropriate to post them up here.
So, with all these
Anyway, this is also nothing new. I thought I just want to share that since making my own vanilla extracts, I've not looked back. And friends whom I have given them my vanilla extracts have raved about the quality of it. So with more vanilla beans on hand,
I bought these colourful glass bottles from a shop in JB when I was there lately. They were rather huge, and I was simply happy! It cost me only RM5.00 each! Each bottle contains about 600g of vodka, so you can imagine how much vanilla extract I'll be getting? And not forgetting my previous two smaller bottles of vanilla extracts! Gee, I think with all these bottles, it's really going to last me a lifetime supply! I'll have to be contented, wouldn't I?

Nothing beats homemade vanilla extract. I have a bottle of vodka drowning some vanilla pods too.
I have a bottle of homemade vanilla extract too. It was given to me by Bee Bee (Honeybeesweets). I like the smell of it and we can never buy those outside.
I just asked hubby few nites ago whether he has stock of vodka for me to make vanilla extra cos kept thinking of it after seeing from A Little Teochew. So lucky stil ve vodka at home, now is waiting to make a trip to purchase vanilla pod then I wil ve homemade as well kee kee kee..
WOW, I am so envious & jealous! You have so much vanilla extract. I am still using the cheap vanilla essence until I can bake better :)
Hey Jane, I just made a batch of homemade vanilla myself a couple weeks back. ;) But instead of vodka, I used Rum! Why rum? Because I tried using both rum and vodka making the extract and it turns out the rum one is so much more intense! do consider using rum next time...you won't regret it. ;) Hope I get a chance to blog about it and you will see what I'm talking about., ;) Yeah...Reese got a bottle of my 1st batch. ;)
Hi busygran,
I can't agree more! That is why we keep making right?
HiReese,
You are so lucky! Anything from a baking friend must be of good quality! ;)
Hi Jess,
Oh yes, you must quickly get down to do it. It takes at least 2 months for the extract to "mature". The longer you delay, the later you have your homemade extract. After that, it's never looking back!
Hi Fiona,
What is vanilla essence? Heehee... Don't use lah, throw away lah. You give me a small empty glass container, I spare you some. :p Btw, it's not that your bake is not good yet, it's because you've not used the REAL vanilla extract! ;p
Hi HBS,
Aiyo, wished I have known this earlier!:p I've used up all my glass bottles using Vodka. How did you find out using Rum is better? Did you find it out from some site? Hmm...maybe I'll go and get another smaller bottle and try using Rum. Thanks very much sharing, else I would never have known. ;))
Hi Jane,
I have never used a vanilla pod before so I have some questions and hope you can help me. Do I have to wash the vanilla pod before cutting and using it? If I make vanilla extract, do I have to store in the fridge?
Thanks.
Joy
Hi Joy,
Please do not wash your vanilla pod. Just use a clean napkin to clean it. I've never washed them!
Do you store your vanilla extract in the fridge. Put it in a cool dark place, like kitchen cabinet. I put mine in my lower kitchen cabinet and let it stand for at least 2 months before I use it.
Hope this clarifies.
Hi Jane
Thanks for the mention. I do take out my bottle of vanilla extract to admire (and shake) every now and then. Your bottles are beautiful!
Hi Ju,
You're most welcome. :) Ya, me too! I'll give it a good shake every once a while.
