One-Ninety at Four Seasons Hotel

The latest sisters' lunch we had was at One-Ninety at Four Seasons Hotel. Thanks to my eldest sister's treat this round, we had a good time. The food was good, and the company was great. We usually take turns to pay for our gatherings. Next round will be my turn. :)

Here is a review of the food we had. Surprisingly, on a weekend, the place was only half filled. I suppose most Singaporeans like to go for full buffet food where all the cooked food are displayed for guests to select. In One-Ninety, the guest selects one entree from the menu, while the appetizer and desserts are buffet style.
Selection of Entree
OneNinety01
Appetiser Spread includes Char Siew, Roast Pork, Grilled zucchinis, Sushis, Cheese Platters, Hams, Variety of fresh tomatoes & carrots, cold prawns, fresh salads, etc. There was another table for mixing fresh salads with dressings like Yuzu, extra virgin olive oil and many others!

OneNinety03
Dessert Spread includes Hazelnut Tortes, Cheesecake, Macarons, Lemon Meringue Cake, Mixed Berries Crumbles, Red Velvet Cake etc.
OneNinety04
Beverages selection include Chamomile Tea, Green Tea, Peppermint Tea, Earl Grey, English Tea, Cappuccino, Lattes etc.
OneNinety12
First entree: Apple-Wood Grill Angus Tenderloin. The tenderloin was medium well. It was a nice cut. You can still see the redness in the meat, which was how we like it done. It was soft and tender, and not at all chewy. The mushroom sauce compliment the tenderloin well. The grilled romaine lettuce was sweet with nice charred taste.
OneNinety09
Second entree: Miso Glazed Hokkaido Scallops. This was really good. You can feel the succulence of the scallops. It was cooked just right. The scallop was wobbly when you bite into it. The juice from the scallop just ooze out to my mouth. I like that juicy big scallop. Wish I didn't have to share this! Miso taste wasn't that prominet. The purple potato cracker was nice.
OneNinety08
Third entree: Confit Tasmanian Trout. Thick slice of trout which looked and tasted like Salmon. Ordinary taste. Nothing special about this trout, though the spinach tasted good.
OneNinety06
Four entree: Risotto Funghi. Notice the truffle slice? Yeah, this was good...really good. The mushroom taste was very very strong. Good for mushroom lovers like us. Risotto was cooked to a perfect texture, not too hard nor soft, just right to chew it. The risotto probably was simmer in the gravy as I can fully taste the funghi in each grain itself! I can't really taste the herbs though. This was power!
OneNinety07
My choice of appetizers.
OneNinety11
My favourite desserts. I was happy to have tasted so many flavours in one go!!
OneNinety10
Overall, this is a good place to relax on weekends.  If you don't like the typical buffet spread other places are offering, then this will be a good place to spend your time. Lunch buffet is till 3pm.
For the month of July, there is a GSS promotion. For $48+++ and above selection, with every four guests, one eats free. This gives you more excuse to visit it in July, doesn't it?

We paid fully for the food. This is a not a sponsored post.

Arashi Shabu Shabu @ JB

I visit our "neighbour" very often. Usually once a month. On Good Friday, hubby decided to brave the traffic jam to visit our neighbour again. We brought our children to watch "Ah Boys to Men II" at KSL. My favourite shopping mall in JB is Aeon Tebrau City. Even though I've been there so many times, this was the first time I tried Arashi Shabu Shabu.

There are a variety of soup bases to choose from. My youngest son preferred to have his own miso soup, whereas my hubby shared herbal soup with my elder son, and I chose to have tom yam soup base. My daughter has no preference, so she shared with all of us. The sets for the shabu shabu starts from RM21.90. I ordered the salmon set at RM$29.90. A-la-carte meat starts from RM10.90. There are various sizes of meat plates, depending on whether you want to share, or for personal consumption.

Overall, I like the selection of items in the set meal, and the ingredients are very fresh. There was a long queue even after we left at half past eight. If you ordered a-la-carte separately, you can expect to pay quite a lot. Set meals are more value for money. We ordered a Garden Tea to go with our shabu shabu. The tea was fragrant and light. I like it.
arashijb1
I ordered this set.
arashijb2
Sauce table. Must try this sauce - Wafu Goma Sauce. It's sesame sauce and it's SUPER DUPER good!
arashijb3
Salmon set with Tom Yum soup base.
arashijb4
A-la-carte extra large NZ beef.
arashijb5
A-la-carte extra large lamb. It has a very strong taste, which I don't like.
arashijb6
Garden Tea. Very fragrant. Helped to clear the oily food.
arashijb7
Overall, it was a good experience at Arashi. However, I realised that after my dinner, I felt very thirsty. Still, it was worth a try. I will like to try other set meals in future.  We paid for the meals ourselves.

Dad's 69th Birthday Celebration

My dad's birthday falls on 10th Aug, the day after National Day. So year after year, how best to gather the family together to celebrate, will be on National Day itself, where it's a public holiday. Most of the time, we dined out, therefore, missing out on the actual national day parade and the fireworks. On one or two years, I convinced them to come over to my place, so that we can watched the 'live' NDP on television, and watched the fireworks from my house.

This year, it was no exception. We celebrated his birthday at a restaurant. The only exception was, the children were not with us. After getting some bonus in July, I felt generous and wanted to buy a good meal for my family. With my sister's recommendation, we decided to go for some Italian cuisine. We figured that the children might not able to enjoy the food, so I left my children at my sister's house with her children. And the adults, together with my eldest son, went for some "fine" dining.

My sister did the 'ground work' of arranging with the restaurant a six-course menu for our family of 10, at $80++ per person. The place to be was PepeNero at Stanley Street. The restaurant set up was small and simple. The decorations on the wall are kept to a minimum too. The lime green wall made the place feel refreshing and the lit candles on the table made it cosy. If you like a quiet ambience, then this is the place to be.

Here's the menu for the evening.

Grissini & Ciabatta bread with olive & sundried tomato dips.
pepeN03
Astice alla Griglia con Pinzimonio di Verdure di Stagione
Grilled Lobster with Fresh Vegetables Sticks and Vinaigrette with Sea Salt
We had a whole lobster to ourselves! The grilled lobster was very well done. It was flavourful with juices flowing out of the fresh. The lobster was really very fresh. There were also lobster flesh in both its pincers. The lobster flesh is limited to the lower half of the body though. I didn't have enough of this! This is a must-try!
pepeN05 pepeN04

“Fritto Misto” di Pesce dell’ Adriatico con Salsa Tartara
Adriatic “Fritto Misto” with Tartar Sauce

This was a mixture of fried calamari and prawns. Dipped them in the special tartar sauce tasted good. As this was served before we finished our lobster, it wasn't as crispy as we hoped it was.
pepeN06
Risotto ai Frutti di Mare
Sea Food Risotto
Seafood risotto was very tasty. In fact, it was a tad too salty for our palate. My parents didn't really like too much salt in their food. However, despite it being salty, we like the flavour. There were squid and prawns in the risotto. The grain was cooked through and was very soft.
pepeN07
Lasagnetta al Forno Profumata al Tartufo con Funghi Misti di Bosco
Scented Truffle Oven Baked Lasagna with Mix Roasted Mushrooms
This...was really good! The truffle really lingered on the palate after eating it. I didn't realised there was truffle in this lasagna until after tasting it! The lasagna was pretty light, not too heavy. Between layers of pasta sheet, you can taste fresh mushrooms and tomato bits.
pepeN08
Pollo alla Cacciatora in Umido
Chicken Huntr's Style
The chicken looked like it was simmer for hours as the meat was easily shredded. It was very soft. The additional of basil leaves gave the dish a special flavour.
pepeN09
"Caponata" di Verdure al Forno
Oven Baked Vegetables "Caponata"
Caponata done it the Chef's way. Every Italian Chef I was told, had their way of making Caponata. As this was my first time trying it, all I can say is, I like it. The cherry tomatoes were really juicy and sweet. The vegetables were full of flavour and very soft till it melts in the mouth.
pepeN10
Totano Farcito con Pane di Altamura, Vongole e Gamberi con Basilico Fresco e Pomodorini Siciliani
12 hours slow Stewed Squid, Stuffed with Altamura Country Bread, Clams and Prawns with Fresh Basil and "Pachino" Cherry Tomatoes
After 12 hours of stewing, you can never find a chewy squid! The squid was so soft, and effortless to eat them. The stuffing was not too fantastic though the sauce was good.
pepeN11
This was complimentary for us. It was Italian Cherries. They were as good as USA cherries - sweet and fragrant.
pepeN12
The dishes were well presented. The culteries were changed after each dish. The service staff were very prompt in topping up our water. As we don't drink, we didn't order any wine. Otherwise, you can find a whole range of wines in the restaurant to compliment your meal.

My favourite dish was the grilled lobster. The sauce goes well with the lobster. I could visit the restaurant again just for the lobster! Truffle lasagna was really good too! Please note that I paid fully for the meal. The review is purely my opinion.

After a great dinner, we adjourned to my sister's house to join our children, and to continue our birthday celebration with dad. As usual, I baked a cake for him - Blueberry Chocolate Cake, using canned blueberries. It so happened that my house has ran out of all fresh fruits!

Since the day I started baking birthday cakes for my family members, they've never really celebrated their real age, because we only used one candle (to save the earth)! LOL.

Happy 69th birthday to my dearest papa!

Spizzico and Laurent's Cafe

Some weekends back, we had our sisters' lunch. I bought a the voucher from deal.com.sg for Spizzico Ristorante Italiano. It is located in UE Square. We were there earlier than expected for lunch. When we reached the restaurant, it was still empty. The restaurant had a "fine dining" set up, with the usual cockeries and wine glasses. The indoor setting were pretty small. It got filled up rather quickly.

The overall experience at this restaurant was just so-so. We found the food to be overly-priced, for something which were not so authentic or fantastic. The dessert fridge didn't look appetizing, so we decided we to skip it totally. I doubt I will visit this restaurant again.

Appetizers
From top left corner: Mixed Salad ($14), Parmigiana ($14) and Sauteed Wild Mushroom ($18).
spizzico1
Mixed Salad was very ordinary. To pay $14 for a bowl of greens is quite pricey in my view. It was just pure greens.

Parmigiana, which was supposed to be famous in Italian dish was a disappointment. According to my sisters, authentic Parmigiana wasn't supposed to taste like that. It was aubergine with baked cheese and tomato sauce. The taste was quite alright.

The Sauteed Wild Mushroom was the best appetisers amongst them. There was this grilled taste though. I like the it though. However, a bit pricey for the quantity we had. :p

Main Course
Ravioli Crabmeat ($24) was good. Even though the pasta was rather thick, there was enough fillings to complement the texture. Even though there was a hint of fishiness, it still tasted very good. The sauce included sundried tomatoes, which were our favourites.
spizzico2
Pizza Salmone ($20) tasted good with its fresh smoked salmon. The crust was thin and topped with lots of rockets.
spizzico3
After lunch, we felt that we were not satisfied. So we proceeded to Laurent's Cafe at Robertson Quay. I was "wowed" by the specialty chocolate sections and the chocolate desserts on display. The ambience was really country. We loved it. I supposed there is a price to pay for good chocolates. I'm sure this is not the last time I'll be there! The amount I paid for the desserts was almost the same as my lunch! Haha...
Laurent1 Laurent2
Carupano Venezuela Hot Chocolate ($9) was far better than their Classic Hot Chocolate Caraïbe 66% ($8). Venezuela Hot Chocolate has a deeper, richer and more spicy taste than the Classic. Classic tasted a bit too much milk. You can only realised the difference when you tried both. However, if you ordered only Classic, you might also like it. [I had forgotten to take a picture of the hot chocolate.] A fudgey dark chocolate cookie was served with the Hot Chocolate. Double yummy!

Next up, Pleasure ($9.80). Layers of chocolates with whipped chocolate cream and hazelnut praline on a thin vanilla sponge cake. Generous hazelnuts with the praline. I love this to bits!
Laurent3
Chocolate Truffle ($7.80). Nothing to shout about this truffle cake though. I think many of the bloggers can make similar cake. I like that it is not too sweet, it's really something that I can make at home, with dark and good quality chocolates.
Laurent4
Chocolate Tart ($7.80). This was the reason my sister brought us here. According to her, the chocolate tart here is the best. I have to agree. The crust was thin and crispy. There was a layer of hazelnut praline, followed by the chocolate. It's dark chocolate. It's to die for. Goes really well with the whipped cream.  We had chocolate overdose for that day. However, we're happy with that!

A Bloggers' Preview - McDonald's Open Doors Kitchen Tour

I was invited by omy, together with 19 other bloggers to tour McDonald's kitchen at King Albert Park. Extracted from McDonald's Open Door Media Release dated 10 September 2011.
"Known as McDonald’s Open Doors, this annual global initiative is back for the third year in Singapore. In Singapore, 5,000 customers have also participated in Open Doors since 2009. A free guided kitchen tour at select McDonald’s restaurants, participants will learn about McDonald’s food from “farm to fork” including:
  • how raw ingredients are sourced from a global supply chain with world-class standards for quality, value and sustainability;
  • how food is prepared and served to customers hot and fresh with our revolutionary “Made-For-You” kitchen system;
  • how we keep our world-famous fries crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside and packed;
  • the ingredients that go into their favourite McDonald’s foods such as 100% beef, whole-muscle chicken and ocean-caught white fish; and
  • the numerous safety and quality checks in our restaurant kitchens.
This year’s Open Doors in Singapore will see 300 sessions of kitchen tours, conducted between 18 September 2011 to 19 February 2012, at 25 McDonald’s restaurants island-wide. About 3,000 people are expected to participate. The kitchen tours will take place every 3rd Sunday of the month. Members of the public can now register online at www.mcdonalds.com.sg/opendoors."
Without further ado, let me give you a preview of what is behind the scenes of the world famous yellow arcs.
Our Open Doors Ambassador - Linda
We started with a tour to their storeroom. It was huge and spacious and well organised. The heavier foods are placed in the lower racks and the lighter packagings are placed in the higher racks. They also leave gaps between the shelves and wall to allow air flow.
King Albert Park's dry storeroom
Ting, our group host, showing us the storeroom. Can you guess what is in the black bottles at the bottom of the rack?
Can you recognise which buns for which burger?
Next, we moved on to the chiller and freezer section where all the meat patties, fries and other dairy products are kept respectively.
Then we went to the crew resting area, where we saw a few crew resting and having their (McDonald's) meals! There was a LCD television which played their training videos. In the crew resting area, there were noticeboards which displays the latest promotions, staff memos, and other information.
We were brought to the front counter to see how they organise themselves. In a team of two, one takes orders, and the other is a runner where he/she will bring the prepared food to the counter.
Now you know where they got all those sauces when you request for them!
The kitchen tour is the most important and interesting. They are very systematic and organised. The frying section are in one section, separating them from the assembling of the burgers. I was pleasantly surprised that the kitchen was very clean and spacious! I used to think there are many crews working in the kitchen, producing the food for us. However, I realised that it was actually lean and mean for the kitchen crews. Many automation were deployed in the kitchen.
Fries dispensing machine. From the freezer to the fryer to the counter
Frying of nuggets and apple pies
Don't you just love the blisters??
Sauces, colourful boxes for packaging and "special order" stickers
In the assembling of the burgers, there will be an initiator who upon reading from the screen for new orders, will start the process by toasting the buns. After that, it was passed on to the next crew who will topped the buns with salads and sauces. The following person will placed the warm patties on the buns, wrapped it up and placed on the counter to be served. In this station, I noticed that there are only three crews. One of the crew will also cook the meat patties when they run out of them!
The initiator started the process by toasting the buns after she reads from the screen for new orders.
Instructions on the bun-toasting machine. Next time, we can check our buns for this consistency!
The second person in the process, he topped up the buns with sauces and vegetables
The last person, who placed the meat patties on the bun and finished the workflow for the burger
Warmer for the meats. Once the green lights go off, it means the meat has "expired". On the left side, the different coloured tongs are used for picking different meat - blue for fish, green for chicken and red for beef patties!
The griller where the meat patties are cooked. Fully automated
Other facts which might interest you:

  1. The kitchen floor is cleaned at least every hour to keep them greasefree.
  2. Crews have to wash their hands every 15mins.
  3. When handling raw and cooked food, different gloves have to be used. Blue glove for raw food, and transparent glove for cooked food.
  4. 100% vegetable oil is used to cook their famous fries. They filter the oil everyday. The oil is changed at least four times a week.
  5. The food is now made-to-order. Only after you order, they will assemble the burger for you. Therefore, you can always ask for more lettuce, more pickles in your food!

After the tour, we were given a big treat! It was like a mini Mc-buffet. As we eat, we also mingle with other bloggers. It was a wonderful session!
Special thanks to these two wonderful staff who served us endlessly
Our communication package, which include three free treats
I asked for water, and they served me Evian! Isn't that wonderful?
Warm buttery corns in a cup
Spicy drumlets and nuggets - drumlet is not too spicy, crispy and oily
Cheese McShaker Fries - cheddar cheese powder gives a different taste to the fries
Cinnamon melts - Ooh! This is to die-for. First time I tried it and I really love it! Hot mini buns soaked in cinnamon caramel sauce
Holicks Mcfluffy - New item on the menu. Holicks were a bit sweet. Overall, the crunchy bits made it a wonderful experience!
Many thanks to Janet from omy, and Kevin from McDonald's for the insightful and tasty invitation! I'll definitely be back for more!

Are you lovin' it yet? I'm lovin' it!
