Two birthday cakes for a girl!

Last Saturday, I suddenly received a call from my cousin, who wanted to order a birthday cake for her daughter's school celebration. After much discussion, it was decided to be chocolate cake. Anything chocolate, period. As I already had plans on Saturday evening and Sunday whole day, I panicked. I asked myself if I can cope or not. If not, I'd better reject him, otherwise, it'll be too last minute for him to customise an order!

After much hesitation and consideration, I decided I shall try my best to do. He wanted to collect on Wednesday afternoon. He wanted to have Ariel as the main character. I had to scout around the house for Ariel's picture. Luckily I have a daughter who loves princesses! Thank goodness, there was a colouring book, with full colour of Ariel.
So on Sunday night, I got down to colour out Ariel first, using white compound chocolates. I had to admit that the colours weren't that perfect though. Then he suddenly message me again and said that he wanted another smaller cake for another separate celebration! Gee... so stressful to make two cakes for the same person. However, he was very very kind to state that if it was too much trouble, I could make both cakes the same. I likened that idea. Saved some work for me.
However, after thinking through again, I thought it might be better to be different, especially if the smaller cake is to be eaten on the same day! So I made an orange sponge cake, with orange buttercream. Similarly, I used white compound chocolate to colour Flounder. I'm sure Ariel would like to have Flounder around.
I was told they loved the chocolate cake more. However, the birthday girl loved the orange cake design more as it was more colourful! Whatever it was, I was glad they enjoyed the cakes.  At least my hours of effort put in were not wasted. Isn't Tasha a lucky girl?

Hi Jane,

Looks like you had a busy day last sunday. The chocolate truffle cake is a must have for chocoholics. I will choose it anytime over the orange buttercream cake, haha.

Great job on the decorations for both cakes. I supposed the orange buttercream is meringue based? Swiss meringue? I like meringue buttercreams. Buttery, smooth and not too sweet. Btw what is the type of colouring used for the compound chocolate?

Cheers and cya on sunday =]

Hi Bakertan,
I was busy from Sunday all the way to Tuesday! Hahaha... Ah yes, the chocolate truffle is truely for the chocolate lovers.
Yup, it's meringue buttercream. I love it too! It's light and creamy isn't it?
I used Wilton's colours to mix in the compound chocolate.
Can't wait to meet all the nice bloggers, see you on Sunday! :)
