I usually topped up with some vodka after I used half of it. When the extract ran low, I just topped them up with vodka again. After 1 round, I add in a few pods. In this link: http://www.instructables.com/id/DIY-Vanilla-Extraction/, the vanilla extract is also kept for months and years. So it's also considered long term. I checked the ingredients of Nielsen-Massey Vanilla extract, it contains sugar & other stuff. So I'm not very sure what other ingredients are added to the extracts commercially.
